Organic Farming

Our Organic Promise to you

When we set out to develop Térapy Ceylon, our core mission was to offer to you ancient Ayurvedic goodness sourced from the virgin soil of our mother land Sri Lanka. For this we worked tirelessly to work with indigenous Ayurveda practitioners and farmers to source the purest and endemic indigenous ingredients our island has to offer.

As much as we wanted to empower the rural farmers and ensure this was not a dying trade (due to rapid growth of western medicines in rural areas), we were concerned about the commercial impact of the demand of our product in these rural communities and its environmental effects. We aimed at ensuring that our sourcing will not only be sustainable, but also brought in economical development to these communities. We were committed to working with the local soil protection associations to ensure impactful education of soil protection was given to all farmers and practitioners.

As such all sourcing of raw material is tested and certified as organic by International standards such as USDA – NOP and EU Organic Board.

How do farmers maintain Organic standards and protect their crops?

In a porous agricultural tropical climate such as Sri Lanka, there are many insects that effect crops. Térapy Ceylon is based on using endemic indigenous ingredients that grow on our land. This means that many of the ingredients that are used in Térapy Ceylon blends grow naturally and in abundance and have little effect from local insects and pests to begin with. Hence, they are naturally organically grown and sourced from the untapped wilderness regions bordering virgin rain forests.

In addition, farmers and practitioners use natural ancient methods of protecting their crops by developing a blend of Kohomba (Azadirachta indica) and local Ayurvedic Basil leaves that is grinded and are sprayed on crops. These herbs too are indigenous to the island and are found in abundance throughout the island.

Why is organic farming important to the rural regions of Sri Lanka?

As the main agricultural areas in Sri Lanka have been severely over farmed with decades of unregulated AgroChemical usage, we have seen farmers and families in certain agricultural regions reporting high levels of Kidney infections and related Diseases. Although these conditions are not proven to be directly linked to excessive use of AgroChemicals there is some evidence that do suggest this as a possible cause. These harmful chemicals take years if not decades to be depleted from the soil.

As many of the Ayurveda practitioners are settled in ancient ancestral lands that border virgin rain forest regions on the island, it was imperative for Térapy Ceylon to ensure the ecosystem is protected as a key priority.

The thriving natural insect diversity in these regions is the driving force behind forests. The fields are swamped with butterflies and bees that are the lifeline to the eco-diversity of our forests. It was our main concern when developing our sourcing process.

Why is organic more expensive?

The yield of crop growing in its natural state takes longer, hence the supply is less per crop which drives the drive marginally higher. Térapy Ceylon maintains standard daily wages to ensure farmers enjoy a certain standard of living, hence this too drives the rate.

What is an Organic Certification?

To ensure Térapy Ceylon and our farming partners are equipped with the international farming standards we work closely with the Control Union which is based in the Netherlands and operates office’s in Sri Lanka. With regular training standards and workshops that are extended to the farmers, they ensure every batch is tested and regular soil testing is carried out in all agriculturally grown crops. We are proud to state that our teas come to you fully certified by USDA – NOP and EU Organic Board.
